2025 There will be only a Spring Buckskin Trail Course this year, as there will be a Wood Badge cource in the Fall
The Buckskin Trail course is a fun and exciting course geared toward Cub Scout and Scouts BSA leadership! Participants are put into patrols within a model troop allowing them to experience the patrol method of scouting.
You will be able to earn the outdoor portion of the Cub Scout programs Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO) by learning valuable outdoor skills to keep your experience safe and fun. Additional online training is needed BEFORE the course to get credit toward BALOO. You will also learn what it is like to be a new scout within a Scouts BSA Troop setting. This is important to be able to prepare your young scouts for the transition from an adult lead unit to a scout lead unit.
The Buckskin Trail also covers the Scouts BSA program’s Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS). IOLS is a required training for Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters to be fully trained. It teaches outdoor skills geared toward Scouts BSA aged youth to be fun and safe in their many outdoor adventures.
The course is held over two Wednesday evenings and one full weekend. Participants will tent camp as a patrol similar to a Scouts BSA troop. An additional outside Patrol meeting or meetings may be necessary.
Whether you are new to scouting, were a scout as a youth or have some time under your belt, The Buckskin Trail has something to offer you. New friends and connections from other units around the Council will be made, improvement to your outdoor skills, learning about how patrols make up a model Scouts BSA troop and most of all a lot of fun during it all.
Please make sure you take all online courses specific to your position and the online component of the BALOO training BEFORE attending Buckskin.
The Buckskin Trail is available for all scouting leaders. To most benefit a Cub Scout Leader, it is recommended to attend as a Bear, WEBELOS or Arrow of Light leader. Attending during that time will allow you to gain experience in the patrol method found in the Arrow of Light requirements. This knowledge will help you better prepare young scouts crossing over into Scouts BSA Troops for that transition. It will also ensure the fundamentals of the IOLS that are needed as a Scoutmaster/Assistant Scoutmaster have been learned closer to leader transition for Cub Scouts to Scouts BSA.
We look forward to seeing you on the next Buckskin Trail Course!
